ADDIE 101

Overview

Title: ADDIE 101 – Introduction to the Instructional Design Model

Audience: Aspiring or new instructional designers looking to build foundational knowledge of ID theory

Role: Instructional Designer, eLearning Developer, Visual Designer

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Categories: ID Theory, Microlearning

Problem & Solution

Many new instructional designers find learning theory overwhelming or too abstract at the beginning of their journey. This microlearning module was created as a concept project to address that challenge — while also helping me solidify my own understanding of the ADDIE model by applying it in a teach-back format.

The result is a brief, interactive resource designed to introduce the ADDIE model in a structured, visual, and engaging way that allows new learners to actively apply what they've learned.

Design Process

I used a simple written storyboard to plan the flow, structure, and interactive elements. The design is divided into three core scenes:

  • Scene 1: A tab interaction that introduces each phase of the ADDIE model
  • Scene 2: A drag-and-drop activity where learners apply the model steps in the correct order
  • Scene 3: A short assessment to reinforce key concepts and provide feedback

Results & Reflections

This project offers a brief, interactive introduction to one of the most widely used instructional design models. While concept-driven and intentionally concise, it gave me the opportunity to practise several key Storyline features — including interactive tabs, drag-and-drop functionality, and quiz logic - all within a structured learning experience.

I also incorporated basic accessibility features into the tab interaction, such as screen reader compatibility, to support more inclusive learning. While the drag-and-drop activity was not fully accessible, this contrast helped me reflect on design choices and usability for all learners.

Overall, the project was a valuable learning experience — both as a creative challenge and as a way to deepen my own understanding of instructional theory by teaching it to others.
